Now and Then

The river we step into every day

will be there, as will the grasses,

the skull growing inside you

will be found by an archaeologist

who will speculate and get it wrong,

she will wash it in the river

as a skull grows inside her body.

The sun will be hot, the sky blue,

clouds will take their turn,

rain will step across the river,

she will study the skull

when she should kiss it.
